Fees and What to Expect

The first meeting. An initial 30-minute consultation is $150.00, payable by e-transfer at the time of the consultation. All initial consultations are held online by video; if video isn’t possible for you, a phone call can be arranged. To arrange one, please use the Request a Consultation form. I listen, ask questions, and give you a frank assessment of your situation and your options. You leave knowing what to do next, whether or not you hire me.

What to bring. Any existing agreements or court orders, your last three years of income tax returns and notices of assessment, recent pay stubs, and a rough list of what you and your spouse own and owe. Don't worry if you can't find everything.

How fees work. Most work is billed by the hour at $350.00 per hour. Some services — an uncontested divorce, independent legal advice, a straightforward separation agreement — are done for a flat fee quoted in advance. I ask for a retainer at the start and send itemized accounts so you always know where you stand. I will tell you before any step that costs real money whether it is worth taking.

Keeping costs down. The best way to control legal fees is to settle early, be organized, and communicate with me by email for routine matters. I will help you do all three.

Legal Aid. No. I do not accept Legal Aid certificates.
